ISFP HQs has organized several workshops for the DFEOs and DFOs. The first workshop was held in June 2004 at Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) Kitui Regional Research Centre. The workshop was aimed at introducing the DFEOs and DFOs from Tharaka, Mbeere and Kitui to ISFP project. After the workshop the officers were taken to Kilifi for a field tour on Farmer Fields School (FFS) activities at the Coast Province as conducted by Coast Development Authority (CDA). This tour exposed the officers to what is FFS, how it is conducted and its activities in general as a method of extension. The tour was an eye opener to the officers that if FFS as an extension tool has worked so well in the Ministry of Agriculture, it could also work for Forestry activities. That's where the idea of Farm Forestry FFS begun.

In August 2004 the DFEOs had a one-week technical workshop in KEFRI Kitui Regional Research Centre. The purpose of the workshop was to expose the officers to dry land and farm forestry as well as other aspects of the ISFP activities. During this workshop the following topics were covered: - ISFP project flow; ISFP Extension Guidelines ; Farm forestry; Conservation and management of dry land forests; ISFP Group Activity Catalogue or example of Participatory Technology Development (PTD); Study Guide for farm forestry and tree / fruit nursery establishment and ISFP Baseline Survey . This workshop was to equip the officers with the technical issues they were to handle in the field in the implementation of ISFP activities.

After one cycle of implementation of ISFP activities, the project organized a six-day workshop in February 2005 at KEFRI Kitui centre for the DFEOs and DFOs. The main purpose of the workshop was to share experiences between the officers, challenges and constraints they faced in the course of implementing ISFP activities. The other issues covered during the workshop were revision of the operational guidelines; farmer run facilitation and development of rough curriculum of Activity Catalogue (PTDs). Other survey reports presented during the workshop were:

•  Ecological resources market survey

•  DFEOs backstopping report done by the FFS TOT trainers

•  Traditional methods used by farmers to break seed dormancy in Melia volkensii (Gurke) in Eastern and Coast provinces of Kenya

At the end of the workshop each officer was clear on what was expected in each PTD, and the plans for the year 2005-2006 ISFP activities. The rough curriculum of activity catalogue will be very useful in planning for day-to-day activities of the Farm Forestry FFS.
